Mahawalatenna Walawwe.

                                 The wallawwe, built as English architect.

        The Mahawalatenna Walawwe is the parental residence of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s
mother Rosmand Mahawalatenna kumarihamy the daughter of N.D.M. Mahawalatenna (Rate Mahatmaya).
 Before the walawwe was constructed he lived at Godakumbura Walawwe.
There are various legends connected with the construction of this walawwe. One such legend is that the
Ratemahathmaya who had gone with some shepherds had felt weary and found that the empty bottle
gourd container he had left on an earlier date had filled with water. This miraculous incident inspired him
to build his residence in that place. Thus the walawwe was constructed in the year 1900 with the consultation
of an English architect.

Though it is now in a dilapidated condition it is of great importance due to the fact that it was once the home
of the first woman Prime Minister of the world not withholding the fact of the belief of the above legend.
