New inventor’s competition
To generate optional power…..
Balangoda has been identified as an area which is moneyed of natural resources. The main are one is the Gem industries which is carried out during the long time. In addition to that Calcite, feldspar, Dolomite and gold are collected from Balangoda.
In addition to that there have medicinal herbs and plants like sandal wood. Balangoda is surrounded by hills which are begun from central hills and close to world famous Mahawalatenna plateau. Balangoda has been selected to generate electricity by using wind power.
Smanalwewa hydro electric power project is situated in Kapugala near to Balangoda. Hydro electricity power was considered as the main source of power in Sri Lanka. Hydro electricity was used to giant development projects. But it is not sufficient to fulfill the power need of Sri Lanka. There for Attention has been given to generate optional power.
There is several optional power generating projects in Sri Lanka. They are heat power stations, Coal power stations, wave water power stations and wind power stations etc…
Wind power was generated in coastal areas and hilly areas. Balangoda Damahana was selected as a suitable area to generate wind power. Firstly they established a tower with fan to test the wind requirements in this area. It is very was successful. Therefore it is suggested to establish six wind power towers.
It is planned add 900 kW electricity to natural electricity system from this project. In this area, we get wind from north eastern monsoons and south west monsoons. Therefore the authorities plan to generate wind power electricity throughout the year.
Power energy is an essential factor to a developing country. It is bless to our area because we have get the chance to fulfill the national need. As villagers we consider it as a great bless.
A new launch to English education
There are minimum occasions to learn English in rural areas of Sri Lanka. Although there are several projects in teaching learning, learning programmes they aim to pass examinations. In addition there are private classes but they do not provide facilities to use English practically as a language. This is common to Damahana which is a rural area. We, Oasisdamahana It foundation has launched a special project as “innovative English project” in order to avoid above problems. Here the children learn English with practical programmes, new technology and enjoyable activities. First we have selected about 30 children and hope to increase the number in group. All the teachers who involve in this programme ready to work voluntarily. Training progarammes are conducted two days per week. Children come to classes from 6.00 Am to 7 Am and 1.30 PM and 4.30.Pm. We have launched a blog site as “http://www.studentsoftheworld.info/sites/schools/43528.php ” To increase the writing ability of children. Every students get the chance to present the articles in this blog. The parents of these children also assist to this programme. Here the students took happy to learn English. It’s a good progress.
A Training programe
It seems that many of the people where are interested in ICT bend to use “Open Source “. Deferent reasons like, they can be taken free of charge, minimum risks of virus, easy to use and user friendly affected this. As a developing country Sri Lanka turns to use open source because the cost of open source is lower than other operating systems.
From recently Sri Lankan education attention tends to “Open Source”. Minister of education of Sri Lanka has launched a program to introduce “Open Source” to the school teachers and students in public schools. Many schools are beginning to establish computer centers only with Open source operating systems.
A workshop was held in Balangoda educational Zone on 2012-03-19 and 2012.03.20 at Balangoda zonal computer training centre to introduce “ Hanthana Linux “Operating system. 40 Teachers who teach ICT and be students who learn ICT participated in this work shop.
